Hunting for Good Sushi in Singapore: Itacho at ION Orchard Review

Introduction

I’ve walked past Itacho Sushi at ION Orchard many times — the long lines, sushi displays, promise of something better than your average mall Japanese joint. Recently I finally sat down there and gave it a full run. Here’s how it stacks up when you’re hunting for sushi in Singapore beyond the usual chains.

First Impressions & Ambience

Located at #B3-20, ION Orchard, Itacho Sushi sits in one of Singapore’s busiest shopping malls, and you feel that energy immediately. The interior is functional more than luxe — bright lighting, sushi bar displays, casual seating. It gets busy, and yes, it can be a little noisy with chatter and mall sounds bleeding in.

But the design choice is smart: the sushi is front and center, the menu is broad, and the vibe leans toward approachable Japanese dining, not ultra-premium sushi theater.

Menu & Signature Highlights

Itacho Sushi boasts over 300 menu items — sushi, sashimi, rolls, grilled dishes, rice bowls, soups & more. Itacho Sushi SG The breadth is part of the appeal: you can mix classic bites with more creative ones.

Some standout menu features and prices (2025) include:

  • Salmon (1 pc) ~ SGD 2.00

  • Blue Fin Tuna (1 pc) ~ SGD 3.80

  • Roasted / aburi items are prevalent — like Roasted Blue Fin Fatty Tuna (1 pc ~ SGD 8.80)

  • Sets like the Roasted 5-Kind Sushi (~ SGD 29.10) or Ume Sushi Set (~ SGD 39.27) give you a sampler approach.

They also run promotions — discounted rolls, limited orders per table for hot deals, etc.

What Really Works

From my visit and what others report, these are Itacho’s strengths:

  1. Freshness & Flavor
Many reviewers assert that sushi and sashimi are fresh, and that you can taste natural umami because they don’t overdo sauces.
One TripAdvisor review said: “Sushi was fresh and waitresses were very attentive.”

  2. Variety & Creativity
The massive menu means there’s always something new to try — from grilled items to fusion-style rolls.

  3. Reasonable Pricing (for a mall setting)
It’s not “cheap sushi” by any means, but compared to ultra-luxury sushi counters, Itacho offers more flexibility in spending. The per-pc sushi prices above show how you can mix high and low.

What Doesn’t Always Hit the Mark

Of course, no place is perfect. Here are caveats I found (and heard):

  • Queue & Wait Time
It’s often busy. Some diners wait 15+ minutes just to be seated.

  • Inconsistency / Service Variability
Since there are many dishes, execution can vary. A few diners note that service becomes slower when the place is packed, or that certain cooked items are less polished.

  • Ambience / Noise
As a mall outlet, Itacho can lean noisy. Others comment that the layout is functional but not cozy.

  • Promotional Limits & Conditions
Some hot deals are limited per table (e.g. special rolls). That can frustrate diners who wanted more.

My Experience: What I Tried, What Stood Out

I went in with medium expectations and was pleasantly surprised. Here’s a mini walk-through of what I had and what I thought:

  • Starter / sashimi combo — clean, well-cut, minimal adornment.

A clean, well-cut, minimal adornment.
  • Roasted / aburi fatty salmon — the torched top gave just enough char to complement the fat without burning flavor.

Aburi fatty salmon
  • Grilled / more creative sushi — items like roasted Blue Fin or special rolls showed ambition.

  • Rice bowls / donburi option — good fallback if you want fuller bites rather than just sushi.

  • Service & speed — when it wasn’t completely full, dishes came at decent pace. When crowded, things slowed.

Overall, the food delivered more than I expected from a mall sushi place. It’s not life-changing sushi, but it’s solid, dependable, and fun to explore.

Who Should Go & When

If I were giving tips:

  • Go off-peak if you can, to avoid long wait times.

  • Bring friends who like variety — the menu is wide enough that sharing is fun.

  • Don’t expect a hushed, ultra-fine-dining sushi ambiance — this is sushi you eat, talk, and enjoy.

  • Try some of their roasted / aburi / unique roll items — that’s where the place shows flair.

  • Use the menu price list (online) to plan ahead — some premium sushi costs jump significantly.

Final Thoughts & Verdict

If someone asked me for best sushi in Singapore under mall prices, Itacho Sushi at ION Orchard would be high on my list. It’s not the place for ultra-luxury sushi — but what it does, it does well: freshness, breadth, and fun variety.

Yes, long lines are indeed a pain, and execution sometimes drifts, but for what you pay, this spot delivers good returns. For sushi lovers who want both safe picks and adventurous bites in one menu, Itacho hits a sweet middle ground.

If I were going back, I’d head there on a quieter weekday evening, order a spread of aburi + special rolls, pair with a light donburi, and let the menu surprise me.
