Sakutto Tempura & Oyster: A Hidden Japanese Counter Experience in Orchard Plaza
A Japanese Dining Escape from the Busy Streets
I’ve explored quite a few of the best sushi in Singapore, but every now and then, I find a place tucked away in an unexpected corner that makes me stop and think, “How did I not discover this earlier?”
That was exactly how I felt when I stepped into Sakutto Tempura & Oyster at Orchard Plaza.
Hidden on the third floor of a building that many people walk past without a second thought, Sakutto feels like a little Japanese dining escape away from the busy streets of Orchard Road. There’s no flashy entrance or grand dining room. Instead, you’ll find a cosy space centred around a counter, where the chefs quietly prepare each dish with care.
The Vibe
Sakutto has the kind of atmosphere that immediately slows you down.
The space is intimate, with counter seats facing the open kitchen where you can watch the chefs work their magic, very reminiscent of my previous experience at another iconic sushi spot within the plaza, Sushi Kyuu. There’s something satisfying about seeing tempura prepared right in front of you, from the moment the ingredients are carefully handled to the final golden piece arriving at your table.
The best seats are definitely at the counter. Watching the chefs fry each piece one by one makes you appreciate the attention and technique that goes into every dish.
The Food
What I love about Sakutto is that it focuses on two things it does really well: tempura and oysters.
The tempura is the star of the show.
Each piece arrives light and crisp, with a thin batter that lets the ingredient shine instead of overpowering it. Good tempura is not about having a thick crunchy coating. It is about finding that balance between texture and flavour.
The seafood options are where Sakutto really stands out. Their Japanese oysters are another highlight, offering a refreshing contrast to the warm tempura dishes. Depending on availability, you may find different oyster varieties from Japan, with prices usually starting from around $8 to $15 per oyster depending on the selection.
For something a little more luxurious, the Uni and Ikura Oyster is a beautiful combination. Priced at around $20+, the richness of the uni and the burst of ikura add another layer of flavour to the fresh oyster.
The Showstoppers
If you’re visiting Sakutto for the first time, these are the dishes I’d keep an eye out for.
- Ebi Tempura (around $18–$25) — This is the dish that best represents what Sakutto does. The batter is light, the prawn is fresh, and every bite has that satisfying contrast between crisp and tender.
- Amadai Tempura (around $30–$40) — The Amadai, or tilefish, is one of the more unique tempura offerings. What makes it special is the texture. The crispy scales create an extra layer of crunch, while the fish underneath remains delicate and tender.
- Teba Goza (around $6) — The chicken wing is crispy on the outside while packed with a savoury filling inside, almost like a cross between a chicken wing and gyoza. It’s a comforting dish that adds a different texture between the seafood courses.
- Prawn Claypot Rice (around $25–$30) — The rice absorbs the deep prawn flavour, with crispy bits at the bottom adding another texture to every spoonful. It’s a great option if you’re looking for something more filling.
The Service
One of the things that makes Sakutto enjoyable is the intimate service that comes with a smaller counter-style restaurant.
The service is attentive without feeling overly formal. Instead of creating a stiff fine-dining atmosphere, the team keeps things relaxed, allowing guests to enjoy the meal at their own pace.
It’s this combination of warm hospitality and the open-kitchen experience that makes Sakutto feel less like a place you simply eat at and more like a Japanese dining experience you take part in.
What I Loved
- The Attention to Ingredients: Whether it’s oysters from Japan or seasonal seafood prepared as tempura, the cooking style feels intentional. The focus is always on bringing out the natural flavours of each ingredient.
- The Counter Experience: At Sakutto, the meal becomes more than just eating. You get to appreciate the small details, from the timing of each fry to the care that goes into plating every dish.
- The Hidden Location: Orchard Plaza may not be the first place that comes to mind when thinking about Japanese dining, which is exactly why Sakutto feels like such a fun discovery.
What Could Be Better
Because Sakutto focuses on freshly prepared tempura, the dining experience is naturally slower-paced. Some dishes may take time to arrive, especially during busy periods, but this is also part of the experience.
Tempura is best enjoyed immediately after frying, so the wait is understandable. The restaurant is also relatively small, so reservations are recommended if you want to secure a counter seat.
Why You Should Try Sakutto
What makes Sakutto stand out is how it brings together two Japanese favourites that are usually enjoyed separately: delicate tempura and fresh oysters.
For me, the biggest appeal is that it feels like a hidden discovery. Tucked away in Orchard Plaza, it has the charm of finding a small Japanese counter restaurant that focuses on doing a few things really well.
It’s the kind of place that rewards diners who appreciate quality ingredients, careful preparation, and a slower dining experience.
Final Thoughts
Sakutto Tempura & Oyster is one of those places that reminds me why I enjoy discovering Japanese restaurants in Singapore.
It doesn’t rely on being flashy or trendy. Instead, it focuses on the simple things done well: fresh ingredients, careful preparation, and a dining experience that feels personal.
Between the crispy tempura, fresh Japanese oysters, and cosy counter setting, Sakutto offers something a little different from the usual Japanese restaurants around Orchard.
If you’re looking for a quiet spot to enjoy beautifully prepared tempura, share a plate of oysters, and spend an evening watching chefs work their craft, Sakutto is definitely worth adding to your list.
